twin cottages restored and brought back to life
This fascinating and challenging project involved converting a neglected, single house back into its original form, as two adjacent cottages built in the 1700s. The age of the cottages and the needs of neighbouring owners were a major factor to be negotiated throughout planning, design, and construction, and achieving the best use of space for contemporary living was key.
The two cottages offered rather modest space with which to work, and we addressed this by placing an open plan kitchen diner and lounge area on the ground floor of each, with a downstairs toilet. We applied similar bedroom configurations to the two properties, giving the bedrooms in each a light, airy feel, and making use of the double height, beamed ceilings and using furnishings befitting the age of both properties. Both cottages had a contemporary bathroom upstairs, which could double as the master en-suite. The result was two practical and highly attractive homes.
